Paige Warby

My interest for illustration started in year 11 and has only peaked over the past 3 years when my good friend let borrow a fantasy book of hers. From there I developed a love for reading fantasy novels and wanted to bring them to life through art, bringing my two passions together, which led me to the path of illustration. Illustration to me is fascinating and can be explored through a diverse range of medias, it is essentially based on a conceptual idea which you can then explore and develop into something which is more than just a concept. Through my college course I have learnt a lot about what it takes to be an illustrator such as meeting deadlines and having the uppermost patience with my works development as possible.

Throughout my love for art since I was a small child I have gone through many different career choices and have finally made up my mind to be an illustrator, it is what I want to do more than anything. Throughout my years in school and college doing art I have had the opportunity to visit many famous galleries such as the Imperial war museum, V&A and the Tate modern. As I have said before I love to read and therefore for one day every fortnight I worked in David's bookshop as work experience while in year 11, I would arrange the graphic novel books and the illustrated cards which had varied artists, I enjoyed doing this because I loved having the chance to look at different illustrators work whether it be in books or on greeting cards, it really inspired me.

Throughout my college experience I have met so many wonderful creative people who inspire me to be better than I am. These people also like traditional illustration and digital illustration which allows me to be surrounded by the illustration scene.

-Why am I interested in this course?
I am interested in this course because I believe the way it is very open in the way of mediums it states on the course description that “Illustration and Visual media is not defined by a medium, material or style.” I believe that for me personally that a very open view on mediums and style is the best thing as I am interested in a wide variety of the arts mediums. In the course description it gives some examples of different Medias used such as sculpture, typography, photography and print based media which is great as I am interested in many of these mediums. The thing that I am most pleased about in this course description is their philosophy for this course “Nothing is off limits.”

Anglia Ruskin University
Illustration and Animation
-Why am interested in this course?
I am interested in this course because of the look on being able to “turn your creative ideas, passion and knowledge into a rewarding career in illustration or animation.” I believe this course will give me the knowledge and skills on Illustration & Animation I would need to work as a visual artist. The belief is that “we often use visual language to communicate complex ideas and information and, with ever-evolving digital technology being used alongside traditional techniques, this is an exciting and fast-moving area to work in” I couldn’t think that statement anymore true to be a part of the ‘ever-evolving’ digital world sounds exiting. In this university, I will get to view the links between illustration and animation, creating narratives using traditional and cutting-edge digital image-making techniques. I will get to start to develop my own personal visual style and also focus on the basics: hone my drawing skills through observation of the visual environment and telling stories through moving image. I will get to produce a portfolio that reflects my own artistic style and meet the current demands of the creative industries. It makes me feel better to know that I will get support by a team of lecturers and tutors who are all artists and researchers themselves and are pursuing their own career in illustration and animation. I feel that to work with the people with more experience and knowledge than me I could get the insights of working in the creative industries.

Illustration
-Why am interested in this course?
The course combines an innovative, experimental and critical approach to the practice of Illustration. Supporting the full scope of contemporary illustration practice, from craft based techniques and drawing through to digital and sequential moving image based work, the course explores how the explosion of possibilities that digital media have created for producing, distributing and publishing graphic work, are changing the role of the designer and design in society through a critical engagement with different forms of contemporary design practice and cultural history. Working alongside Graphic Design students, you'll build the key skills of a designer and use this as a platform to engage with different types of illustration, including books, editorial applications and various forms of sequential narrative. Throughout this course, I’ll get to develop drawing skills that can be applied in projects shared between the animation and graphics courses, to help me develop work in the field that is most relevant to your interests and strengths. The unique nature of this combination of disciplines allows flexibility to use illustration in a wide range of media such as video games, films, animation, advertising and publishing. Emphasis is placed on the social, political and environmental contexts of design in society, and the designer as a maker of meaning in visual form - to this end, you are encouraged to explore the wider territory of illustration, whilst maintaining the core values that underpin the practice. I will get helped with the preparation of a professional portfolio as well as a CV (curriculum vitae) and material so that I can eventually market myself.

Animation
-Why am interested in this course?
“Although commercial animation may predominantly be a digital medium, the underlying approach in the BA (Hons) Animation course is to understand animation in the context of its origins in Art & Design. A significant emphasis of the curriculum therefore is placed on acquiring the fundamental practical principles of animation through drawing and storytelling – narrative.” I am interested in this course because I would be gaining most of the specialist and some transferable skills which will enable me to work in a variety of mediums, this university has a state-of-the-art multi-million pound Media Arts Centre, which has computer suites and studios for animation. I will get to develop my practical skills across a range of traditional and contemporary animation practice. I would learn from specialists and traditionally and digitally trained staff, with the opportunity to have regular one-to-one contact focusing on your personal creative development. Animation is an intensive, mainly studio-based practice. Drawing is an essential skill underpinning the learning of all forms of animation. The emphasis is on developing a strong technical and personal approach to drawing and story. I will have the chance to collaborate with other subjects, including Interior Design and Music Technology. I like that in this course Careers development is integrated so that I will have a sound awareness of the real-world context of the creative industries in general and Animation in particular. I think it is good that this course would provide support to help me develop a strategy for obtaining appropriate employment at the end of the course. I would also be helped with the preparation of a professional portfolio as well as a CV (curriculum vitae) and material so that you can market myself.

             Where I want to be...

When you first think about someone being an illustrator you automatically think that this person is someone that just draws pictures but Illustration runs a lot deeper than the work just being pictures. With technology advancing further everyday graphic illustration is a popular route and personally a favourite of mine as whether it be concept or finished design it always fascinates me with the resulting aesthetics.

Multimedia Design
TV, film, computer games, websites, apps, animation
Multimedia design is a the type of art where you have the chance to use multiple forms of media. It is used in video games, information kiosks, websites and many other interactive applications. Multimedia designers are given creative freedom to use various medias to create something beautiful and therefore I believe this could be a good job for me.

 Games Design
Game Design is a very team oriented career path, what is the rundown of a game designer? game designers are responsible for Devising what a game consists of and how it plays, defining all of the important elements of the game. The design team is also in charge of the Communication within the rest of the development team who create the art assets and computer coding.
Do I need certain qualifications? Qualifications are not completely necessary as I know but game designers are usually of a graduate degree in games.

                                                                  Illustrator
In illustration you can be good in more than one area of illustration for example technical illustration, illustrations for children's books or even advertising.
Within an Illustration career it can vary what you will be doing on a day to day basis, such tasks could be finding your style by exploring different requirement briefs for many clients, negotiating prices and coming up with time plans and of course actually creating the illustrations with varied media such as illustrations using hand drawing, painting or computer design packages.
The skills I will need to have in order to become a good illustrator are always being on the bull with time management I cannot stress to myself enough on how much I need to work on time management. I will also need to have the ability to work to a brief precisely always paying attention to specific details from the client base and last but certainly not least I will need creativity and imagination to be able to make myself stand out from the crowd of other illustrators in the industry.
